Project Overview:  What is StoryBond?

StoryBond is a user-friendly app that designed as a powerful learning tool to help children stay focused, enhance their understanding, and improve their time management skills when engaging in reading. Additionally, the app connects parents and their children through reading, catering to children of all ages and their parents.

Recreating kindle mobile app with an individual focus on Kids' concentration on reading

Redesigned Kindle provides two versions:

# 1

Parents' portal & Kids' portal

Parents can set clear limits on screen time, a software program turns the screen off automatically at set times; switches the background to eye protection mode.

# 2

Reward every time kids finish reading one story.

Research: How does interactive reading experience help our users?

To understand the problems of our users and their reading behaviors , I partnered with a UXD and interviewed 3 families who have kids aged between 3-10 years old and parents are working parents. From the interview, we found out two main painpoints from parents and kids:

#1 Parents' Perspective:

Parents worry about kids having less self-control overusing digital screens and its negative impact on kids' eyes.

# 2 Kids' Perspective:

Kids prefer listening more than reading, engaging on an interactive screen than a physical book.

we realized:

  • The lack of engaging experiences is making the reading experience less

  • Parents are too busy and have no time to supervise their children to read or tell bedtime stories.

  • Unable to control the amount of screen time the child spends.

How might we provide an interactive reading experience for kids and protect kids’ eyesight?

If we want the app to be helpful, it should be...

Reward every time kids finish reading one story.

Wireframe & User Flow

I created Lo-Fi wireframe to demonstrate the screens and interactions of the app.

Visual Design

When it was clear that there were no big problems with the Lo-Fi prototype, I proceeded to create a Hi-Fi prototype. I wanted to ensure that the fidelity was high enough so that the user experience was close to an actual product, allowing me to perform accurate usability tests.

Usability Study

After completing the visual design, we tested the prototype with three representative parent users and two children users to assess the application's user-friendliness. The test was conducted over Zoom video calls, during which the participants were given the following tasks, and I observed how they navigated through the application:

Task 1: Select and add books to the child's bookshelf.
Task 2: Adjust screen time and brightness.
Task 3: Complete a reading task and receive rewards.

The participants were able to navigate through the app fairly easily. They appreciated the interface and provided the following feedback:

Suggestions to make the experience better

- Give an option of adding reminders for the reading task

- Video chat when parents are away from their children, they have the opportunities to online accompany with them.

- Suggestion to include a dictionary lookup tool that allows children to click on any word to hear the word aloud and see its definition.

- Integration of children's books into a child-friendly app, creating a truly engaging communication experience for kids and their families.

Key Takeaways

I had the opportunity to hear parent’s voices, understand the problems, and think about how a digital product could be a viable solution for both parents and children. I collaborated with another user experience designer to craft a usable design deliverable throughout a 2 weeks tight schedule while maintaining from user research, define the user problems, ideation to final visual design.

What’s Next

Continue gather feedback from users and use it to continuously improve the design. Regularly update and refine the product based on insights gained from real-world usage.
